Formula

Caffeine clears by first-order elimination, so a fixed percentage leaves per hour rather than a fixed number of milligrams. Each drink decays as C(t) = C₀ × 0.5(t ÷ t½), where C₀ is the dose in milligrams, t is hours since you drank it, and t½ is your half-life. The calculator sums that curve across every drink you log, so your bedtime figure is the total body burden, not just the last cup.

The cutoff time is the same equation solved backwards: t = t½ × log₂(dose ÷ headroom). Headroom is your sleep threshold minus whatever your earlier drinks still contribute at bedtime, which is why adding a morning coffee moves your afternoon cutoff earlier.

Where the "No Coffee After 2 p.m." Rule Comes From

It traces back to a 2013 study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine. Drake and colleagues gave healthy sleepers 400 mg of caffeine at three timings — 0, 3, and 6 hoursbefore bed — in a double-blind, placebo-controlled design. All three disrupted sleep.
