| 36 | 8.3 | 9 | 3rd |
| 40 | 9.2 | 10 | 3rd |
Calendar months use the true average of 30.44 days (4.35 weeks) per month.
Note:This converter reports gestational age the way your maternity care team counts it — from the first day of your last menstrual period, with 40 weeks (280 days) as term. It doesn't replace a dating ultrasound, which remains the most accurate way to establish gestational age, especially in the first trimester.

How to Use Pregnancy Weeks to Months Calculator
Step 1: Pick your entry mode
Choose "My week of pregnancy" if you know your gestational age, or "My due date" to convert straight from your estimated due date.
Step 2: Enter weeks and days
Type the weeks and extra days from your last scan or pregnancy app — for example 20 weeks and 3 days. In due-date mode, just pick the date.
Step 3: Read the month conversion
The result shows your true calendar months (using 4.35 weeks per month), the month of pregnancy you are in, your trimester, and progress toward 40 weeks.
Step 4: Compare against the milestone table
Check the weeks-to-months table to see where 12, 20, 28 and 40 weeks fall, and how far the common four-weeks-per-month shortcut drifts at your stage.
Key Features
- Converts gestational weeks and days into true calendar months (4.35 weeks per month)
- Works from either your current week or your estimated due date
- Shows completed months plus the month of pregnancy you are in
- ACOG trimester and term-stage labels from preterm through post-term
- Milestone table exposing the four-weeks-per-month drift at every stage
Understanding Results
Formula
The converter turns your gestational age into days (weeks × 7 + extra days), then divides by 30.4375 — the true average length of a calendar month (365.25 days ÷ 12). That average equals 4.35 weeks per month, which is why dividing weeks by 4 always overstates how far along you are: at 20 weeks the honest answer is 4.6 months, not 5. In due-date mode, your gestational age today is derived first as 280 days minus the days remaining until your estimated due date.
Reference Ranges & Interpretation
Trimesters follow the week-based boundaries used in ACOG patient guidance: first trimester through 13 weeks 6 days, second from 14 weeks 0 days to 27 weeks 6 days, third from 28 weeks 0 days until birth. The term-stage badge applies the 2013 ACOG/SMFM definitions — preterm before 37 weeks, early term 37w0d–38w6d, full term 39w0d–40w6d, late term 41 weeks, and post-term from 42 weeks. A full 40-week pregnancy converts to 9.2 calendar months, or exactly 10 lunar (28-day) months.
Assumptions & Limitations
All conversions assume gestational age counted from the first day of your last menstrual period — the convention your maternity team uses — not from conception, which occurs roughly two weeks later. The months figure is a calendar average; individual months of 28–31 days will shift any single conversion by a day or two. None of this replaces a dating ultrasound: a first-trimester crown-rump length measurement dates a pregnancy to within about 5–7 days and overrides period-based dates when they disagree. Ask your midwife or obstetrician which date is on record before relying on any converted milestone.

Converting pregnancy weeks to months looks like it shouldn't need a calculator at all — divide by four, done. That's the arithmetic behind almost every wrong answer in this topic. A calendar month averages 30.44 days, which is 4.35 weeks, not 4. The gap seems trivial at first: half a day here, a day there. But it compounds every single month, and by the end of pregnancy the four-week shortcut has drifted almost a full month off course. It's why 36 weeks feels like it should be nine months and is actually 8.3, and why a 40-week pregnancy is 9.2 calendar months rather than the nine everyone quotes.
This guide works through the honest conversion, shows exactly where the shortcut breaks, untangles the "months pregnant" phrasing problem (completed months and the month you're in differ by one, always), and maps weeks onto trimesters the way the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists actually defines them.
A Month Is Not Four Weeks
Only February in a non-leap year is exactly four weeks long. Every other month runs 30 or 31 days — four weeks plus two or three extra days. Across a year those extras add up to roughly 29 days, which is where the "extra month" hiding inside a 40-week pregnancy comes from. Treat every month as 28 days and a year becomes 336 days instead of 365; you've quietly deleted a month from the calendar.
Pregnancy apps and forums keep the four-week version alive because it makes the milestones land on clean numbers: 12 weeks "is" three months, 20 weeks "is" five, 40 weeks "is" ten — wait, ten? That last one is the tell. Nobody says pregnancy lasts ten months, yet 40 ÷ 4 = 10. The shortcut contradicts the nine-month framing it's usually deployed to support, and most people never notice because they only ever convert one milestone at a time.
Converting Pregnancy Weeks to Months: 4.35 Weeks Per Month
The honest math starts from the year: 365.25 days ÷ 12 months = 30.4375 days per average month, and 30.4375 ÷ 7 = 4.348 weeks per month. So the conversion the calculator above runs is:
Take 12 weeks exactly. That's 84 days, and 84 ÷ 30.4375 = 2.76 months — two full months plus about 23 days. The four-week shortcut calls it 3.0 months, a week ahead of reality already, at the end of the first trimester. Run the same math at 20 weeks: 140 days ÷ 30.4375 = 4.6 months, so "halfway" is four and a half months, not five. And 28 weeks — the gate into the third trimester — is 196 days, or 6.4 months, when the shortcut insists you've finished seven.
Notice the error always runs the same direction. Dividing by 4 instead of 4.35 inflates the month count, so the shortcut always tells you you're further along than you are. That's a pleasant lie in month three and a cruel one in month eight, when it promises a baby three weeks before 40 weeks arrives.
How Far the Shortcut Drifts by 40 Weeks
Here's the full damage report, milestone by milestone. The drift column is the gap between the two conversions expressed in days — it grows by roughly 2.4 days for every "month" the shortcut counts:
| Weeks pregnant | "4 weeks = 1 month" says | True calendar months | Shortcut is ahead by |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 2.0 | 1.8 | 5 days |
| 12 | 3.0 | 2.8 | 7 days |
| 16 | 4.0 | 3.7 | 10 days |
| 20 | 5.0 | 4.6 | 12 days |
| 24 | 6.0 | 5.5 | 15 days |
| 28 | 7.0 | 6.4 | 17 days |
| 32 | 8.0 | 7.4 | 19 days |
| 36 | 9.0 | 8.3 | 22 days |
| 40 | 10.0 | 9.2 | 24 days |
Two rows deserve a second look. At 36 weeks the shortcut announces nine months — done, fully cooked — while the calendar says 8.3 months with almost a month of pregnancy still to run. And at 40 weeks the shortcut lands on ten months, which is how the "pregnancy is really ten months" meme survives: it's an artifact of bad division, plus a coincidence with lunar months we'll get to below.
Completed Months vs. the Month You're In
"How many months pregnant am I?" has two defensible answers, and they always differ by exactly one. At 20 weeks you have completed 4.6 months — four full months are behind you. But you are inyour fifth month, the same way a baby in the first year of life is a zero-year-old. Ask a forum and half the replies use one convention, half the other, and the thread ends in an argument that's really about grammar, not obstetrics.
The calculator shows both on purpose: the decimal (completed months, e.g. "4.6 months") and the ordinal ("you're in month 5"). When a relative asks how far along you are, the ordinal is the socially expected answer. When you're comparing against a week-based milestone — an anatomy scan at 18–22 weeks, a glucose screen at 24–28 weeks — the completed figure maps more cleanly, because those windows were defined in weeks in the first place.
Where the Trimester Lines Actually Fall
"Tri" suggests three equal thirds of 13.3 weeks each, but the boundaries in actual use aren't equal. ACOG's patient guidance draws them at completed weeks: the first trimester runs from 0 through 13 weeks 6 days, the second from 14 weeks 0 days through 27 weeks 6 days, and the third from 28 weeks 0 days until birth. That makes the trimesters 14, 14 and roughly 12 weeks long for a birth at 40 weeks — and the third trimester stretches to 14 or 15 weeks if you deliver at 42.
In months, the borders land on ugly numbers: the second trimester begins at 3.2 months, the third at 6.4. This is exactly why month-based trimester charts disagree with each other — some round 28 weeks to "month 7", others to "end of month 6", and both are defensible roundings of 6.44. If you need the trimester answer specifically, our trimester calculator works from the week boundaries directly, so rounding never enters into it.
Why Your Midwife Counts in Weeks, Not Months
Clinical timing in pregnancy is too fine-grained for months to carry. The difference between delivering at 36 weeks 6 days and 37 weeks 0 days is the difference between a late-preterm and an early-term birth — one day, invisible in months, meaningful in neonatal outcomes. The formal term definitions adopted by ACOG and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine in 2013 slice even finer: early term is 37w0d–38w6d, full term 39w0d–40w6d, late term 41w0d–41w6d, and postterm 42 weeks onward. Every one of those categories is narrower than a month.
Weeks also anchor the whole dating system. Gestational age counts from the first day of the last menstrual period — about two weeks before conception actually happens — and a first-trimester dating ultrasound measuring crown-rump length pins that age down to within about 5–7 days. Months can't hold that precision. If you're not sure of your current week, start with our gestational age calculator, or use the pregnancy week calculator to work it out from your last period, then bring the week back here for the month conversion.
Nine Months, Ten Lunar Months, or 9.2?
All three numbers describe the same 280 days. In calendar months, 280 ÷ 30.4375 = 9.2 — nine months and about six days, which is where "nine months" comes from and why it's a rounding, not a fact. In 28-day lunar months, 280 ÷ 28 = exactly 10, which is why older obstetric texts describe pregnancy in ten lunar months and why the tenth-month claim isn't entirely wrong — it's just using a different month.
There's one more wrinkle: the 280 days themselves are a convention, not a measurement of your pregnancy. Naegele's rule (last period, plus seven days, minus three months, plus a year) assumes a 28-day cycle with ovulation on day 14. Only around 4 in 100 babies arrive on their due date, and a first pregnancy runs a median of several days past it. So converting weeks to months sits on top of a due date that is itself an estimate — our due date calculator covers how that estimate is built and when an ultrasound overrides it.
What to Do With Your Number
Use months for people and weeks for planning. Tell your family you're five months along; tell your employer your leave starts around week 38; book the whooping-cough vaccine in the 27–36 week window your provider quotes, because that window was never a "month" to begin with. When an app and a chart disagree about your month, check whether one of them is dividing by four — nine times out of ten that's the whole disagreement, and the drift table above tells you exactly how many days apart they'll be at your week.
And if the week itself is the thing you're unsure of — cycle longer than 28 days, irregular periods, a scan that moved your date — settle the week first with a dating method, then convert. A months figure built on the wrong week is precise nonsense.

How many months is 12 weeks pregnant?
12 weeks is 84 days, which works out to 2.8 calendar months — you are in your third month, not finished with it. The popular four-weeks-per-month shortcut calls 12 weeks exactly 3 months, running about a week ahead of the calendar. Either way, the first trimester continues through 13 weeks 6 days.
How many months is 20 weeks pregnant?
20 weeks is 140 days, or 4.6 calendar months, putting you in month 5 of pregnancy. It is the halfway point of a 40-week pregnancy in weeks, but not the five-month mark — that arrives around 21 weeks 5 days. The 20-week point usually coincides with the anatomy scan window of 18 to 22 weeks.
Is 28 weeks 7 months pregnant?
Not quite — 28 weeks is 196 days, or 6.4 completed calendar months, which means you are entering month 7 rather than finishing it. What 28 weeks does mark precisely is the first day of the third trimester. The four-week shortcut that calls it a flat 7 months is about 17 days ahead of the real calendar.
How many weeks are in a month of pregnancy?
A calendar month averages 30.44 days, which is 4.35 weeks — not the 4 weeks most conversion charts assume. Only February in a non-leap year is exactly four weeks long. That extra 0.35 weeks per month is why the shortcut drifts almost a full month off course by the end of pregnancy.
Why is 40 weeks of pregnancy more than 9 months?
40 weeks is 280 days, and 280 divided by the 30.44-day average month gives 9.2 months — nine months plus about six days. The traditional "nine months" is a rounding of that figure, while older obstetric texts describing "ten months" used 28-day lunar months, and 280 divided by 28 is exactly 10.
What trimester is 27 weeks — second or third?
Still the second. Under the week-based boundaries ACOG uses, the second trimester runs from 14 weeks 0 days through 27 weeks 6 days, and the third begins at 28 weeks 0 days. Month-based charts blur this line because 28 weeks converts to 6.4 months, which some charts round to month 6 and others to month 7.
Do you count pregnancy months from conception or from your last period?
From the first day of your last menstrual period, the same starting point used for gestational weeks. Conception typically happens about two weeks after that day, so at "one month pregnant" the embryo is only around two weeks old. All the conversions on this page use the last-period convention your maternity care team uses.
How many months pregnant am I at 36 weeks?
36 weeks is 252 days, which converts to 8.3 calendar months — not the 9 months the divide-by-four shortcut suggests. You still have about four weeks to your due date, and delivery before 37 weeks 0 days is classified as preterm, so 36 weeks is genuinely not the end of the road.
